Vehicle Buying Tips
Being prepared before you shop puts you in control of the entire process, from the first test drive to the final signature.
- Set your full budget before you shop. Look beyond the sticker price and monthly payment to the complete picture: insurance, fuel, routine maintenance, and registration fees.
- Get pre-approved so you know your rate and your limit before you visit a single dealership. It puts you in the same position as a cash buyer and lets you focus on finding the right vehicle rather than negotiating financing on the spot.
- Compare new and used honestly. New vehicles offer the latest features and full manufacturer warranties. Quality used vehicles offer a lower purchase price and slower depreciation. The right choice depends on your priorities and how long you plan to keep it.
- Inspect, Test Drive, and Check the History. Review the vehicle's history, take a thorough test drive, and consider an independent inspection. Need a vehicle history report? Ask a Tidemark representative for a CARFAX.
- Know the Vehicle's Value. Before negotiating, research the vehicle's value using resources like J.D. Power, Kelley Blue Book, or Edmunds so you can negotiate from an informed position not the dealer's asking price.
Financing Tips Before You Shop
Getting your financing in order before you visit a dealership is one of the most effective things you can do to protect your budget and simplify the process.
- Check your credit before you apply. Your credit score directly affects the rate you qualify for. Reviewing it ahead of time gives you a chance to address any errors and set realistic expectations.
- Know the difference between pre-qualification and pre-approval. Pre-qualification is a quick estimate based on self-reported information. A Tidemark pre-approval involves a formal review and gives you a real rate and limit you can use at the dealership.
- Budget for the total cost, not just the payment. A longer loan term lowers your monthly payment but increases the total interest you pay. Run the numbers on different term lengths before you decide.
- Understand your trade-in value separately. Dealers often bundle trade-in offers and purchase price together, which makes it harder to evaluate either deal. Know what your current vehicle is worth before you go in.
- Avoid opening new credit right before you apply. New credit inquiries and new accounts can lower your score temporarily, which may affect your rate. Hold off on other credit applications until your vehicle loan is finalized.
Dealer vs. Private Seller Purchases
Both options can be a good deal depending on your situation. Here is what to keep in mind with each.
Buying from a dealer: Dealerships offer a wider selection in one place, often include certified pre-owned programs with limited warranties, and can handle the titling and registration paperwork for you. Financing is also available on-site, though dealer rates may be higher than what you can get through Tidemark. It is worth getting pre-approved first so you have a direct comparison.
Buying from a private seller: Private sales can offer a lower purchase price since there is no dealer overhead built in. The tradeoff is that you take on more responsibility: there is typically no warranty, no on-site financing, and you will need to handle titling and registration yourself. Always get a vehicle history report and arrange an independent inspection before finalizing any private sale.
Financing either way: Tidemark finances both dealer and private-party vehicle purchases. If you are buying from a private seller, having your financing arranged in advance through Tidemark keeps the process straightforward and gives you a clear spending limit going in.
Title & Registration Information
Once you have your vehicle, titling and registration are the last steps before you are road legal. Requirements differ between Delaware and Maryland, so here is what to expect.
- Bring proof of identity, proof of insurance, and the title or bill of sale, plus payment for applicable fees and taxes.
- Delaware: Titling and registration are handled through the Delaware DMV. Visit dmv.de.gov for current requirements, fee schedules, and branch locations.
- Maryland: Titling and registration are handled through the Maryland MVA. Visit mva.maryland.gov for current requirements, fee schedules, and branch locations.
- When Tidemark finances your vehicle, we are listed as the lienholder on the title until the loan is paid in full. We coordinate the lien paperwork with your state so the process stays straightforward on your end. Once the loan is paid off, the lien is released and the title transfers fully to you.
